Artesa Press Kit - Winery and Grounds

Artesa Winery & Grounds
Artesa opened as Codorníu Napa in 1991. Built by the Raventos family of Barcelona, owners of Codorniu in Spain’s Catalonia region, the winery brought the family’s 450-year winemaking heritage and 125-year history as one of Europe’s leading methode champenoise producers to the Napa Valley.

Carneros was chosen as the home for Artesa because of its cool climate and long growing season, ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Designed by renowned Barcelona architect Domingo Triay and executed by Napa Valley architect Earl R. Bouligny, the dramatic, avant-garde winery was incorporated into the hills of a 350-acre estate overlooking the Carneros region.

The environmentally conscious winery was built by removing and setting aside 30 feet of hilltop, then matching the facility’s height to the hill’s original elevation. The completed 127,000 sq. ft. structure was covered with reserved earth and planted with native grasses. The naturally insulated winery blends with the surrounding hillsides.

Resident artist Gordon Huether exhibits works in various media, including glass and metal, throughout the visitor center, and his six sculptures surround the main fountain. A large bronze by Spanish sculptor Marcel Martí stands in the front reflecting pool. The sculpture of the Madonna and child in the courtyard by an unknown Catalan artist is a reproduction; the original resides in the Rondel Cellars in Spain. Reproductions of turn-of-the-century poster art commissioned by Codorniu with the leading Spanish artists of the day hang in the mezzanine stairwell.
