2001 Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County

The fruit was obtained from three vineyards. Gold Coast Vineyard and Lake Marie Vineyard are located in the eastern part of the Santa Maria Valley about midway between the Bien Nacido and Sierra Madre vineyards, while Cariega Vineyard is in the very cool Los Alamos Valley near Vandenberg Air Force Base. The vineyards are cane-pruned and were planted from the late 1970's to mid-1980's with field selections of Pinot Noir. Yields in 2001 averaged 3.1 tons per acre.

Winemaking
After hand-harvesting, the grapes were de-stemmed only (whole berries). Some lots received up to five days of cold soaking before fermentation. The wines were fermented in open-top vessels with a 1:1 height-to-diameter ratio for optimum cap exposure. About 10% whole clusters were added to the fermentations. Most lots were inoculated with one of several yeast strains; some lots went through uninoculated fermentations. A pneumatic punch-down device was used up to four times daily to break up the cap and extract flavor and color. The wines were pressed directly into barrels, malolactic fermentations were completed in barrel, and the wines were racked just prior to bottling after spending 13 months in half new, half used French oak cooperage.

Tasting Notes
A wealth of expressive fruit announces this heady wine - lots of black cherry, plum and Oriental spice with background hints of evergreen forest. Lovely, polished textures carry intense black cherry flavors with grace notes of herb and oak.

Restaurant Wine

"Suddenly, Artesa is making some of California’s best Pinot Noirs. The Santa Barbara version is finely flavored, full bodied, and well balanced; a Pinot Noir with smooth texture and intense red fruit (cherry, strawberry, plum) aromas/flavors, and overtones of nutmeg and oak."

Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences

"Exceptional...with a Gevry-Chambertin sort of underbrushy, spicy note. Fresh cherry aroma and taste, and a lot weightier in the mouth."

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine

"From its slightly brushy notes to its soft-centered structure, this wine proclaims its Central Coast beginnings, and it is fairly full-bodied, rich and long in the manner so often seen in Pinots of that area. Deep and tasty."

Sacramento Bee

"Overall, the most forward, complex and intriguing of the trio (of Artesa Pinot Noirs) is the Santa Barbara County, whose rich fruitiness is nicely balanced with suggestions of mushrooms, leather and spice."

Wine Enthusiast

"Complex, earthy aromas. Pungent earth, dusty rose and spice flavors; nice mouthfeel. Full, dry, tangy finish."

San Francisco Chronicle

"Artesa Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is smoky, brooding and deeply flavored, with good texture and length."
