Classic Tier Reserve Tier Limited Release Wines

Carneros Estate Reserve Pinot Noir


  Artesa's Estate Pinot vineyards hang on the hillside around the winery on the foothills of Mt. Veeder. This wine comes from several of the highest elevation vineyards in Carneros. The great drainage of our blocks ensures intensely flavored small berries and moderate (at best) yields. Temperatures are moderated by the adjoining San Pablo Bay, cool afternoon breezes and persistent morning fog. The sun burns off this fog in the late morning causing the temperature to immediately jump 15 degrees. This climate yields grapes that have both enough cool hang time and sunshine to develop great depth of flavor with great natural acid.

Winemaking
Gently hand-harvested, the grapes were destemmed without crushing. Our massive must chiller guarantees that our Pinot gets a long cold soak and slow cool start to its fermentation. Most lots were inoculated with one of several yeast strains; some lots went through uninoculated fermentation. A mixture of thorough punchdowns and gentle pumpovers gives color with supple mouth texture. This wine was pressed off shortly after dryness and aged in French oak barrels. This wine is the blending of our best performing vineyard blocks of the vintage. Complexity and depth are increased by using 115, 667, Pommard and Martini clones of Pinot Noir in the blend.

Tasting Notes
A refined expression of great Carneros Pinot Noir. This wine is beautifully balanced and subtle. Intertwined aromas of raspberry, cherry and red currant are forefront from start to finish. Seamlessly multi-layered with fruit and oak spices of clove, nutmeg and smoke that melt into a lingering berry and vanillin oak finish. The gentle tingle of acid keeps the berry fruits lively, will complement food and enable this wine to age gracefully.
