2003 Syrah, Sonoma Valley

Our Syrah grapes came from the southern end of Sonoma Valley. Its location overlooking San Pablo Bay provides a cooling breeze to lengthen flavor development. The southwestern exposure of the vineyard helps to fully ripen the berries. Careful management of crop load on Syrah is critical as this varietal will easily hang more fruit then can fully ripen. It was hand harvested at the peak of ripeness.

Winemaking
Destemmed and crushed into open top fermenters. Inoculated with pure yeast, punched down three times daily, and fermented over a 14 day period. The free run wine then went to a mixture of French barrels and puncheons to complete malolactic fermentation. This wine is the result of barrel-by-barrel selection of the richest most intensely flavored barrels. It is the highest expression of the vintage.

Tasting Notes
Intensely dark ruby color, this is a boldly intense yet balanced Syrah. A dense core of blackberry fruit enveloped in cumin, black pepper, California bay and eucalypt spices. This wine has leather and chocolate notes of a great Syrah. Enjoy the wine when you pop the bottle open, but enjoy it even more upon decanting. Will age gracefully for five to seven years.

567 cases produced. 14.6% alcohol by volume.

Wine Enthusiast

"The deep fruit and leather aromas of this silky wine are offset by stylish herb, earth and mineral notes. Smooth as it is, it has body and a chewy feel on the palate, as well as a long licorice and roasted fruit finish. Admirably, it manages to be at once straightforward yet intense and complex." 90 score.
