Exactly what are tasting notes? And where do they come from? Well, at Artesa, they are the comments of the winemaker, carefully recorded as he tastes and discusses the wines. Keep in mind that wines, like winemakers, are organic entities that change and age over time. That said, we try to be accurate and honest in our appraisals - so you're not reading a work of fiction filled with every luscious sounding adjective the writer can summon. Plus, we've thrown in a little technical data for good measure. |

2002 Elements Red Table Wine A delightful mélange of aromas and flavors. Specifically blended from many varietals, or elements, this wine is brimming with lively black cherry and black berry fruit wrapped in mocha and fudge. It is supple and spicy, with hints of mint, cinnamon, oregano and camp fires. This wine has the structure to age for several years. 18,800 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.2% by volume. 2001 Elements Red Table Wine Loads of ripe, dark fruit showing black cherries, black plum and currant, followed by hints of brown spice with roast coffee and chocolate filling out the aromas. On the palate the wine is round and plush. Black raspberry and wild blackberry flavors lead off with sweet spice and bright fruit fill the mid-palate. 2004 Alexander Valley Garnacha Rosado Wonderfully clean cherry and strawberry fruit is accented with a touch of brie. The wine is supple and soft yet the tartness carries the fruit and leaves your mouth watering for the next sip. The delicious fruit and creaminess of this wine reminds me of strawberries and cream. Garnacha is one of Spain's wonderful grape varieties where it was grown before it became known as Grenache. 327 cases produced. Alcohol content, 13.8% by volume. |

2005 Carneros Pinot BLanc Apple blossoms dominates the nose. Hints of butter, vanilla and caramel add depth to the nose. By mouth, our Pinot Blanc has clean apple with notes of peach and kiwi. Gently nuanced oak, butter and creaminess integrate seamlessly into the finish. 228 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.5% by volume. 2002 Carneros Pinot Blanc Tropical fruit and melon begin the showy aromas of our first Pinot Blanc. Ripe fruit and sweet hazelnut precede the rich entry. 2003 Alexander Valley Tempranillo This is a bold wine with plenty of blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as exuberant white pepper. There is a concentration on the extracted fruit and a slight tension within the youthful tannins that should allow this wine to improve for years. All this fruit and spice is backed with vanilla, leather, and smoke. 3,000 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.4% by volume. 2000 Carneros Tempranillo Loads of jammy black raspberry fruit and a hint of mint and dried lavender fill the aromas. 2002 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Abundant aromas of ripe plum, sweet spice, cassis, and a hint of mint inhabit the nose of this wine. On the mouth it is thick and rich with hints of juicy blackberries and vanilla. It has big texture with a ripe and smooth finish. 3,900 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.5% by volume. 2001 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Dark, syrupy fruit with rose and violets open up the nose of this focused wine. The mouth follows with sweet cherry-berry, juicy fruit and texture into seamless oak for a rich deep finish. 1,313 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.1% by volume. 2000 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Abundant aromas of ripe plum, sweet spice, cassis, and a hint of mint inhabit the nose of this wine. Alcohol content, 14.1% by volume. 1998 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon This Cabernet Sauvignon presents very concentrated aromas of blackberry, cherry and black currant with a subtle interlacing of oak toast. On the palate, lush, supple textures lead to bright, complex berry flavors and a lasting finish. 1,350 cases produced. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (750 and 375 ml) This Cabernet offers flavors of fresh ripe currant and cassis. Enveloped in dark chocolate, vanilla, cedar smoke, violets and clove, this is what Napa Valley is. These aromas entice you and the rich and supple mid-palate fills your mouth with soft velvety tannins. A perfect touch of drying cinnamon on the finish reminds you that this is the king of wines and will age gracefully for over a decade. 6,300 cases produced. 2005 Carneros Chardonnay An exuberant expression of great Carneros Chardonnay. Aromatically and in the mouth this wine is full of lemon, peach, apple, and melon with hints of kiwi and lime. Beautifully multi-layered, this wine also has some oaky smoke and spice that melt into a lingering vanilla and butter finish. Perfectly balanced with the gentle tingle of acid which keeps the fruit lively yet still preserving a silky texture and finish. This wine will age gracefully. 24,800 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.2% by volume. 2004 Carneros Chardonnay This wine fills your mouth with an abundance of fruit aromas and flavors of lemon, peach, pear, honeydew melon, kiwi, and apricot. Beautifully multi-layered, this wine also has vanilla, oak smoke, caramel, and hints of spice that melt like butter over time in your mouth. Perfectly balanced with a gentle tingle of acid to keep the fruit lively while preserving silky texture and creamy fullness. This wine will age gracefully. 11,600 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.3% by volume. 2000 Carneros Chardonnay This Chardonnay presents a tantalizing range of aromas from floral, fresh apple and citrus notes to ripe stone and tropical fruits against a rich oak background. The wine finishes full and creamy with enduring pear, peach and honey flavors. 14,000 cases produced. Alcohol content 14.2% by volume. 1999 Carneros Chardonnay All of our grapes are hand-harvested during cool morning hours. The Chardonnays are not crushed, but either destemmed or sent direct to press as whole clusters. This Chardonnay was barrel-fermented and aged sur lie for 15 months in French oak cooperage and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. 5,500 cases produced. 14.4% alcohol by volume. 1998 Carneros Chardonnay Complex ripe apple, pear nectar and butterscotch aromas and a touch of nutmeg fill the rich, seductive nose of this Chardonnay. Alcohol content, 15.3% by volume. 2002 Carneros Chardonnay Reserve Creamy and rich on the nose. The aroma is filled with yeasty tropical fruit. Alcohol content, 14.6% by volume. 2001 Carneros Chardonnay Reserve Rich, sweet tropical fruit aromas are backed with creamy vanilla and spice. Alcohol content, 14.3% by volume. 2000 Carneros Chardonnay Reserve Our Reserve bottling shows abundant sweet pear, lemon oil and honeysuckle aromas in an elegant nose, while the mouthfeel is lush and fleshy, infused with intense ripe apple, pear, lemon and vanilla flavors through a very lengthy finish. 200 cases produced. Alcohol content 14.4% by volume. 1998 Carneros Chardonnay Reserve Aromas of ripe pineapple, pear, butterscotch, hazelnut and brown spice fill the nose of this Reserve Chardonnay. On the mouth, a sweet impression, supple textures and good structure enhance rich flavors of spiced apple, mango, lemon oil and a hint of lemon zest on the refreshing finish. 500 cases produced. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 2004 Napa Valley Chardonnay This non-malolactic Chardonnay has bright fruit flavors of apple and lemon-lime with hints of honeyed melon. Alcohol content, 9.5% by volume. 1999 Gewurztraminer, Russian River Valley, Select Late Harvest This delightful wine presents a mouthwatering, floral, spicy nose with soft lichee nut and ripe pear aromas. Brimming with black cherry and blueberry fruit, cinnamon, clove, and hints of a campfire in a cedar forest. Layered, but with the fruit always predominant. In the mouth a wonderfully smooth wine that has the warm comforting silky feeling from start to lingering finish. Splendid acid and tannin balance insure this wine will both go well with food and evolve into a greater wine over the next decade. 900 cases produced. Alcohol content, 14.5% by volume. 2000 Sonoma Valley Merlot Warm plum and dark fruit fill the nose of this wine along with hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate, it offers juicy, ripe cherry 9,450 cases produced. Alcohol content, 13.3% by volume. 1999 Sonoma Valley Merlot Reserve Aromas of rich and creamy oak behind dense dark fruit with concentrated plum, cherry, and dark fruit. 2003 Sonoma Valley Syrah Intensely dark ruby color, this is a boldly intense yet balanced Syrah. A dense core of blackberry fruit enveloped in cumin, black pepper, California bay and eucalypt spices. This wine has leather and chocolate notes of a great Syrah. Enjoy the wine when you pop the bottle open, but enjoy it even more upon decanting. On the palate, the wine is lushly textured with marvelously juicy plum and berry fruit and subtle hints of French oak on the lengthy finish. 2,983 cases produced. 14.1% alcohol by volume. 1999 Sonoma Valley Syrah After hand-harvesting, the grapes were de-stemmed only (whole berries) and fermented in open-top vessels with a 1:1 height-to-diameter ratio for optimum cap exposure. Each lot was inoculated with one of several yeast strains. A pneumatic punch-down device was used up to four times daily to break up the cap and extract flavor and color. The wines were pressed directly to barrels, malolactic fermentations were completed in barrel, and the wines were racked just prior to bottling. The wine was aged in half new, half used Bordeaux-style French oak, one-fourth in 500-liter puncheons, for 14 months. 1,450 cases produced. 14.5% alcohol by volume. |
